Void Chapel

A working estate wanted somewhere to hold four funerals a year and nothing in between. A roofed building would have been used for storage within a season, so the nave has no roof.

The walls are rammed earth taken from the excavation, stabilised with 6 percent lime and built in 22 lifts. The colour changes every lift because the soil changes every 400 millimetres, which is a soil survey rendered at full scale.

Only the sacristy is covered. In eleven recorded uses since completion, rain has fallen during one.
